General
Benefits of Mulching:
Layers of mulch form an excellent weed barrier and cooler root zone for vigorous growth. Mulch reduces evaporation for less watering and helps prevent soil erosion. It is recommended that you apply 2”– 4” of mulch to maximize the benefits.
There are two different types of mulch - Shredded Bark and Wood, both providing the above mentioned general benefits as well as their own distinctive benefits.
Shredded Bark Mulch: consists of mainly the bark which will almost entirely break down over 2-5 years. As it breaks down, the benefits it produces for your soil are added nutrients, improving the over all soil structure while maintaining all of the general benefits. It has good weight characteristics so it stays in place. You should reapply by the second year. Most people like to top up a little each year to keep that fresh look.

Premium Red Wood Mulch: consists of 100% clean virgin wood, ground to a uniform size. Coloured with safe iron oxide pigment that is visually appealing. The colour is 90% retained the first year and loses 30% per year thereafter. This type of mulch will not break down like bark mulches but you will need to reapply to compensate for the loss of colour (2-3 years).
